GOSH Zayed Research Centre – blurring the boundaries between medicine and research

By Graham Cossons and Matthew Tulley 12 Jun 2019 0

This poster focus on The Zayed Centre for Research – a beautiful environment in which clinicians and researchers are able to work alongside each other in the diagnosis and research into rare diseases in children.

Abstract

This poster focuses on the collaborative achievements of the design in making the environment conducive to true translational medicine, helping blur the boundaries between medicine and research.

The poster will cover:

  • the challenges of achieving a controllable thermal environment in both hospital, laboratory and common spaces;
  • the lighting solutions that enabled both sensitively designed spaces to reassure children or carers in one part of the building, and exciting collaborative working spaces for researchers in another;
  • how we managed to mix hospital, laboratory and office design standards under one roof;
  • the approach to managing security, access and patient safety in a complex building with many user types;
  • feedback on the completed building and comments from the client stakeholders on the process and finished product; and
  • the lessons learned that could be passed on to the next team procuring a new building for translational medicine?
