Prof Christian Ottensmeier

Christian Ottensmeier MD PhD FRCP is a medical oncologist who trained at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University Münster, Germany, before receiving a fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. He completed his PhD in molecular immunology in Southampton, where he was appointed to chair in experimental cancer medicine in 2007. In 2019, he gained an associate professorship at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, CA, USA.

In August 2020, he joined the University of Liverpool, the Liverpool Head and Neck Center, and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, as professor of immuno-oncology. Since January 2022, he has served as director for clinical research at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

He currently leads an early-phase portfolio of trials to deliver more effective immunotherapy, with a focus on head and neck cancer, and lung cancer. His laboratory studies how best to induce tumour antigen-specific immunity through vaccination and how to overcome immune-suppressive features of the tumour micro-environment.

He contributes to the editorial boards for the Journal of Translational Immunology and the newly founded open-source BSI journal 'Immunotherapy Advances'.
